Welcome again to the Underground Movement Show presented by ElectronicRhythm.com. This week's visual podcast set comes from a recording of Mr. Mikkas which many of you know him as Djuma Soundsystem (Get Physical/EMI). We caught up with the DJ/Producer at a Propaganda Party held at the famed Sullivan Room in NYC! Join Djuma Soundsystem on this musical journey and, like always, catch music of the weekly spotlighted guests from the Underground Movement Show and other artists on the multiple pages of ElectronicRhythm.com and much much more!
SULLIVAN ROOM PROPAGANDA! 043: DJUMA SOUNDSYSTEM [GET PHYSICAL / EMI- NORWAY]: ..used to be two and now it's one. Norwegian DJ & producer Mikkas is flying the Djuma Soundsystem flag solo these days. The spirit of production and DJ style remains the same. That trademark of warm beats and melodies is alive and well both in the studio and on the road. The sound is between tech house, house, disco, and techno, with a lot of personality and humanity involved. This is music, and not just grooves! It's catchy, but still underground and it can entertain a festival going mad, as well as an intimate club. Djuma Soundsystem had a major radio and club hit with "Les Djinns" (the single biggest selling track on beatport.com) and has proved to be much more than a one off, with releases like "This sound", "Atilla", "Small fries", "Zillion lights", "Bipolar", "Blizzard" and "Stoli", on well known indie labels, like Get Physical, Rebirth, Soundz, IO and Tool Room. They have been remixed by Uner, Tiger Stripes, Trentemøller, Martinez & Moby, to name but a few and Djuma Soundsystems music has been charted and supported by all the major tech house DJ's. As Djuma Soundsystem, Mikkas has toured the world many times and played some of the best venues and crowds out there, clubs like The End (London), Space (Ibiza), Zouk SG (Singapore), Blue Frog (Mumbai), Kazantip (Ukraine), Villa (Oslo), Hardpop (Juarez), Nevermind (Sydney), Cielo (NYC), Stadium (Jakarta), Space (Miami), Watergate (Berlin), Kristal (Bucharest), or festivals like Fusion (Germany), Roskilde (Denmark), Reworks (Greece), Universo Paralello (Brazil), Hove (Norway), Free Fat Festival (Ukraina), Exit (Serbia), and the biggest gig of all - playing the last hour counting down to midnight at Baha beach in Rio on new years eve 2009, - in front of close to a million people! ... there's plenty gold left in the Djuma vault, and new tracks on the way on This is, Neurotrax, Soundz and Get Physical. Djuma Soundsystem are also making new collaborations with Xpress2, Kolombo and Emok...plus a dj mix compilation is just around the corner as well.
Djumba Soundsystem BIO: Djuma Soundsystem´s productions have been going from strenght to strenght, “This Sound” on BRUT, “Jaded” on Toolroom Records, “Bipolar” on Rebirth Records as well as “Zillion Lights”, “Small Fries” and “Les Djinns” of course, the most selling track on Beatport ever, released on the mighty Get Physical label, are just some of the highlights in their producing career so far. Next up from the Scandinavian duo is the new single on SOUNDZ. “Blizzard” is a deep and quirky bassline-driven tech houser, with a trippy melody that should satisfy even the most critical of heads. Remixes will come courtesy of Uner and Hardfloor, and the package is scheduled for an October release. Collaborations with Xpress2 and Riva Starr are due out soon as well. Norwegian Mikkas and Danish Lars have established themselves on the global DJ circuit, with two world tours under their belt they have played some of the best known clubs out there: The End (London), Space (Ibiza), Zouk SG (Singapore), Blue Frog (Mumbai), Kazantip (Ukraine), Studio Martin (Bucharest), Villa (Oslo), Hardpop (Juarez), Nevermind (Sydney), Cielo (NYC), Arena (Santiago), Stadium (Jakarta), See Sound Lounge (Seattle), Watergate (Berlin), Kristal (Bucharest) plus other amazing gigs like when they played in Rio on new years eve 2009 in front of close to a million people. It all seems like a long way from their first job making music for the Royal Danish Ballet, but the boys keep coming up with new takes of their signature sound, warm tracks with a tight focus on the melodic elements and solid grooves!

We take off with another edition of the Underground Movement Show Visual Podcast Experience along with this week's guest Onda Skillet of AeroTropic. Based in NYC, Onda's unique style can really be taken and appreciated with his long dj sets where the tracks get a chance to develop and tell their story. We caught up with him when he played a selection of deeper tracks at the art gallery opening of artist Fumero. (http://www.fumeroism.com) Though you will experience a great ride with this mix, it does not fully capture the broad musical tastes of Onda Skillet, where he is also known for throwing down power-driving grooves on the dancefloor. Keep up with Onda Skillet through his appropriate social media links! AeroTropic Music: Onda Skillet's AeroTropic Music expresses his study and use of sound vibration and frequencies in his musical performances. “I research the effects of sound and how they influence us in our environment, depending on the complex symmetry of the vibration thus allowing a new positive influence in the body. For example: the ways sound frequencies vibrate the water molecules in our bodies influence us to feel certain emotions and redefined feelings. In performances, I tune out specific frequencies that vibrate brainwaves to a whole new level of symmetry. Just as essential oils like lavender trigger specific feelings and emotions, I use essential audio complexities to innovate the way we feel.” Onda Skillet’s music is charged with profound emotion, penetrating the inner depths of the soul, and warming even the coldest of hearts. What begins as a time machine journey through your memories, evolves into a constant racing and harmonious vortex of sound. We venture into another episode of the Underground Movement Show. This week we bring you a live recording during a 4-US-BY-US event at NYC's Z Hotel Rooftop with Mr. Kyle Geiger in the mix. Label owner of Cubera Records which devotes their direction to "a series of productions that carry the melodic presence of the deeper techno sound, while still maintaining the teeth needed for peak hours of the night." Kyle gives us a taste with this week's podcast of what to expect when Mr. Geiger takes control of the decks. We enjoyed the set that evening and we know you will too. Bio: Kyle Geiger Cubera///Drumcode///Soma///Droid///Sleaze///Perc Trax Hailing from a region known for its basketball and corn, the emergence of an artist from Indiana such as Kyle Geiger is marked as seldom at best. He certainly is no stranger to the international techno arena, with releases on heavy hitter labels such as Drumcode, Soma, Perc Trax, and Droid. Refusing to rest on his laurels, Kyle continues to push the boundaries of his sound through the creation of his own label known as Cubera. Being his brainchild, Kyle has been able to push new musical concepts free of any outside limitations with the end objective being to create a more moody and memorable collection of productions. Kyle is not a producer first, DJ second, but chooses to look at both aspects of DJ and production as a whole; one is not complete without the other. Originally inspired by the harder, percussive stylings the techno sound featured on seminal labels from the late 90's, Kyle has witnessed the evolution of the genre as it morphed into a more accessible, groove based sound. Still loving the energy and power of the more straight forward side of techno while embracing the genre's changes, Kyle has refined his productions and DJ sets into what very well may be a new breed of soundscapes that pushes things forward for the next generation of techno to come. We welcome Belgium's Tom Hades to this week's Underground Movement Show Podcast with a great set recorded at a NYC Trilogy event. Tom delivers the Techno sounds which has given him great fame in the Electronic Dance Music Scene with DJs, Producers and of course, the dancers. This set expresses the many years of dedication to the EDM Scene as Tom plays bangers from current releases to hidden rare gems. We hope you will enjoy this mix and look for the full video recording of his set as well within the Live Player of ElectronicRhythm.com. Bio: Tom Hades started to discover and experiment with electronic music when listening to DAF, Kraftwerk, Front 242, ... At the age of 15, he bought his first keyboard, the famous Casio CZ-101 and transformed his game-computer, Amiga 500, into his first DAW. Quickly he got experienced with MIDI-integration and sampling functions, which gave him even more urge for buying/selling new material as addition to his current setup. During the same period, his old schoolfriend, RedHead, was co-producing with Marco Bailey. He got in contact with Marco too which led them in 2000 to their first co-release. And this was the start of a big period of releases, included the anthem of "I Love Techno" in 2001. Have a look at the discography for the complete overview ... In the same year as I Love Techno, Tom started to do live performances. He got more & more experienced and started to play all over the world. His live performance was fully appreciated in countries like Spain, Colombia, Brazil, France, Poland, Sweden, Mexico, Japan, Austria, Italy, Norway, Ireland, ... and on many known festivals like Nature One, I Love Techno, City Parade, ... In the first period of 2002, Tom also produced his first solo release. In the next 3-4 years he continued to produce tracks on his own as well as his co-production with Marco on respected labels like MB Elektronics, Pornographic Recordings, Rhythm Convert, Northwest Dynamics, Invasion, Fine Audio, Patterns, Lupp, ... In 2004, they decided it was time to take the next step, start a label. And so Rhythm Convert was born. Initially, the purpose of the label was to give an opportunity to new talents to release their stuff. Guys like Axel Karakasis, Spiros Kaloumenos, Veztax, ... did a very good job to show the people what is was all about. Nowadays, the label is more aimed to produce electro-techno tracks and less oriented towards loopy techno sounds. End 2004, they released their full album, Rude Boy, caused a stirr all over the world. The best proof was their live performance during Nature One @ Pydna were they literally "blew the place to kingdom come" ! His current releases on labels like MB Elektronics & Rhythm Convert are oriented in the same way his musical taste changes, more melodic and even sometimes more dramatic music with flavors of techno, minimal, tekhouse and electro. Nowadays, Tom is busy at concentrating in his next step, to develop his "dj-career". In the near future, you can expect dj-sets with dedication and filled with energy, as known from his live-sets, to give his fans the pleasure of clubbing ! But as every self-respected artist, he will never forget his roots, so live-sets will still be part of his main occupation ! In the means of productions, future releases will certainly be done, as well as a second album together with Marco. So keep your eyes open on some new productions, because they will certainly surprise lots of people !!! Gil K - Nosi Music Label Owner Live at Sullivan Room NYC We are pleased to bring you this week's visual podcast experience from Nosi Music's Gil K during his birthday celebration at the famed Sullivan Room in NYC. Gil provides us with a slick menu of delectable beats as the night club pumps with a great Saturday Night NYC ambiance. Listen to the pre-show interview to know more about Gil K and his unique record label who has gained major popularity in the underground dance music community within the last years! Bio: From the dark, cramped basements of the Lower East Side, to the cavernous loft spaces of Brooklyn, Gil K is well known in the notorious New York underground DJ scene for being a bona fide dance-floor destroyer. Whether the vibe calls for deep house, acid, techno, or cutting edge nu disco, he consistently pleases the crowds both at home and abroad. Seasoned DJ, label owner, and event promoter, Gil K has been a key player in New York’s underground dance community for nearly a decade, whose international appearances include regular trips to the heart of Central America. Since his first pre-dawn DJ set at the Sunjam festival in Honduras back in 2004, year after year his musical sensibility earns him a place on the festival line-up, as well as shows in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. In 2005, Gil K closed out his year-long tour in Latin America and Europe with shows in Copenhagen and Barcelona. Upon returning to New York City and having experienced the wide spectrum of dance music culture that stretches from the Atlantic to the Caribbean and from the Americas to Europe and back, Gil K founded the critically acclaimed record label NOSI Music. Since the launch of the label in 2006, NOSI has become a home for young artists the world over – from NYC to Tegucigalpa, and beyond, growing into a community of DJs, artists, dancers, and music lovers who embody the NOSI spirit. It was during his time touring in Latin America that Gil K was first envisioned the NOSI concept that has since become a lifestyle brand. Since 2008, the label’s local and international artists play regularly in NYC, showcased in NOSI Music’s signature NO REQUESTS parties. By championing a future-forward blend of beats that land somewhere between house and techno, NOSI Music – the label and the parties – continue to grow in talent and popularity at home and abroad. Stay tuned for what’s coming next.
Nosi Music About A sophisticated mix of global electronic music releases and events, conceived for discerning dance floors by the next generation of underground dance music all-stars, lead by passionate industry professionals united in a collective effort to make history. Biography NOSI Music is reaching the crowds of discerning clubbers and music enthusiasts with its inclusive approach. Welcoming dancers and listeners to its events and releases worldwide. Founded in 2006 by NY-based DJ & producer Gil Kuruneri. NOSI Music was born from the energy of music, travel and excitement. Just like a newborn, the conception of the label was over nine months, spanning an impromptu DJ tour of Central America. Gil has taken that excitement and transferred it into an idea: reach out to talent and bring it to the masses. His vision is an amalgam of design, music and lifestyle. NOSI Music is an open source in the new paradigm of music and music labels; a company for creative relationships coupled with strong visions of the future. While still traveling in Central America Gil reached out to his friends and asked for tracks that they were working on. The first signing was Mike Hoska. His track “Blues Box” a rock and rock floor-filler, brought Gil to exactly what NOSI inspires. His launch pad for what was to follow. All of the artists that are signed to NOSI are people who are leaders in their respective dance music scenes. From wherever they are, they are the people leading the front line of this new culture. Assured success these days is based on diversity and NOSI Music supplies that with its inroads into event bookings and creating atmospheres that inspire excellence. Having worked with indie-dance powerhouse System Recordings, Gil brings attitude and knowledge to the signing table. Gil Kuruneri is drawn as much to the business of music as he is to the music itself. There are now 34 releases and 2 compilations on NOSI Music in three years. Since 2006, people have come forth to help with creating a draw of inspiration and culture that has continually expanded. By creating an open relationship with his artists, Gil has drawn musicians to him with that same vision. Now young artists are flocking to NOSI Music because of its belief in new talent and the ability to give them a platform to breath. NOSI Music has reached out to the future – and the world is responding. **PLEASE SEND ALL DEMOS/PROMOS TO NOSIMUSIC@GMAIL.COM** Gil K on Resident Advisor Nosi Music on Beatport Nosi Music Soundcloud Nosi Music Facebook

That’s only half of it. PERSONAL MESSAGE: I’ve already done what I have needed to do. I got no kids, nothing behind me any longer, no rear-view mirror… I’m a twig on the shoulders of a mighty stream. Ain’t nowhere to go other than forward and take each day as it comes. Namaste. Bio: I was born on the south-west side of Chicago in the suburbs. Raised by a stern father, and a caring mother, I had very little male influence as mainly my family consisted of females. Growing up, I spent more time breaking things and putting them back together. Legos, video-games, and biking was my hobbies. While I never did well in school, I was always a hard worker. Multiple years were spent always working with public service, helping out the community, and learning from my father. From the age of 14, I’ve always had at least 2 jobs. My thirst for electronics, video-games, and other hobbies had to be fueled by my earned money. With my electronics hobbies, and friends that were on my same intellectual level, I got into radio. I set up one of the most powerful CB radio base-stations at the age of 10 in a 30 mile area. As the hunger progressed I started to get into video and audio editing. My friends and I would record videos almost everywhere we went. We set up a crude studio where we mixed VHS, reel-to-reel, cassette, MP3, broadcast radio, Vinyl, VHF radio, police scanner, you name it, we mixed it. Eventually we even set up a multi-mile wide FM transmitter that broadcast around the neighborhood to our own channel. Let’s just say from that point on, the 2600 lifestyle was always a welcome option to learn and expand the mind. My highschool years were spent working as a Public Access broadcast Technician. I helped run a 100,000+ subscriber public access studio outfitted with the latest equipment at the time. There I learned linear and non-linear cutting edge editing. Proper lighting techniques, camera angle and composition, live audio mixing, you name it in broadcasting, I did it. About this time, I started getting interested in dualing turntables. A family friend Chris Pappas helped me start on my journey. We produced a mini-disk mix right off of 2 connected turntables on my bedroom floor. It was a wake-up. I was completing myself to understand the art of touch, spin, drop, que, flip, search, back-spin, and chop. I started on my craft. This all came in handy over the years as I worked my Vinyl and became more and more tighter with each mix I produced. After high-school I spent 2 years at broadcasting school further sharpening my techniques. Additional radio broadcasting training was absorbed, and I warmed up to using my voice to professionally deliver a message. From writing, time-line generation, theme creation, voicing and inflection techniques, I was producing my own content for multiple advertisement agencies. I continued playing music, and with the advent of social media, I was able to make a dent in the great city of Chicago in late 1999. Starting on the South-West side of Chicago, I slowly creeped my way from DJ Appetizer all the way to DJ Headliner. I never really forced my way into the large venues as I was always needing to wake up the next morning. Unlike most DJs, I was a good boy. I literally lost count of the multitude of underground parties I played back in the day. There were too many to count. If you sit me down, I got some great stories to tell ya as a functioning underground DJ in Chicago. WAREHOUSE, WAREHOUSE, WAREHOUSE!!!!! LOGAN SQUARE, CHICAGO To this day, I continued working hard, learning, breaking things, putting things back together, still playing video games, and now I find myself working as a Global IT Engineer. My mind is ever-expanding. If there is a way to fix it, I’ll find a way. If there’s a lock, I’ll make a key. If I just don’t know what to do, I call upon my “minions.” We are many. Expect me. JOHN TEJADA Welcome to another episode of the Underground Movement Show! We have a special treat for you this week, electronic music innovator, veteran and owner of Palette Recordings….John Tejada. We catch up with Mr. Tejada during one of his NYC appearances during a 4 Us by Us / Trilogy event where ElectronicRhythm’s own G-Ron threw down a great warm-up set. DJ Diggy conducts an informative interview with John Tejada to give you a closer look at what makes the legendary producer tick. John delivers an amazing DJ set that we had to give you an extra 20 minutes of to get a taste I his stylings, skills and an assortment of his self-produced tracks. Enjoy the podcast as much as we did when it was broadcasted on our Live Player. John Tejada: Biography: Normally associated with his peers in techno from Detroit, Europe and elsewhere, John Tejada has embraced electronic music as a personal frontier, expanding on his resume as a techno recording artist as producer, remixer, DJ, and label owner. Known for crafting a brand of subtle, musical techno, his recorded output ranges across tempo and genre lines, from chilled out affairs with spacious arrangements to pulsating, densely layered, deeply energetic tracks that work magnificently in the hands of DJs as well as on the home stereo. John Tejada was born in Vienna, Austria on April 21, 1974. His parents, both professional classical musicians (his mother an opera singer and father a conductor) began his early piano training at the age of 4. In the summer of 1982, John would move with his mother to her place of birth, Los Angeles. It was that summer at the age of 8 another instrument would catch his eye, the drums. Teaching himself to play along to classic rock music, John quickly learned his way around the drum set (an instrument he still plays to this day in his I’m Not A Gun project). Everything changed however when he got his first taste of early 80’s hip hop music. The impact of those early productions and electronic experimentation was very strong. Soon after, at the age of 12 John was given his first set of turntables and a mixer. He wanted to figure out everything he was hearing DJs do at that time. His first gigs came at the age of 12 for his own school, DJing his school dances. Soon after his fascination with DJing began his fascination with production began. Just as he was completely determined to learn the tricks of local DJs, he now wanted to know how the music was made. His introduction came around the age of 15, when he acquired his first looping delay. Soon after came his first workstation, an Ensoniq EPS sampler. This opened up a whole new world of possibilities. John spent every part of his day honing his craft. In 1991, while still in high school, John was already recording his first productions. He was also involved in college radio, even though he was just a junior in high school. John had a spot on “The Fly ID Show” with DJ Rob One. John produced the show’s first record for Rob and also went on to do some hip hop production on Ruthless Records. It was during this time that he met his long time collaborator and best friend Arian Leviste. The two met at a hip hop recording session in ‘91. John, already tired of the hip hop scene and where it was going, spent hours talking to Arian about acid house, techno, ambient house and everything they seemed to have in common. The two agreed they would meet weekly to compose material. It took some time before they would release any music, but in 1994 they pressed up their own single and that started a chain reaction of releases. John and Arian during this time also were accepted into Cal Arts’ (California Institute for the Arts) electronic music program, but both decided not to attend to hone their craft on their own. Soon after, John enjoyed a series of releases on European labels like A13, Multiplex, and Generations R&S. In the fall of 1996 he started his own label, Palette Recordings as an outlet to release his own productions without having anyone tell him how to do it. The demand for his music continued to grow and labels such as Ferox, Sino, Mosaic, Immigrant, Plug Research, Pokerflat and 7th City all released Tejada 12”s. John began traveling internationally in ‘97 to showcase his DJ skills around the globe, traveling to more than 25 countries and playing various clubs and festivals around the world. Festivals included Movement (formerly The Detroit Electronic Music Festival), Sonar Festival (in Spain and Tokyo), Dance Valley (Netherlands), Sync Festival (Greece), Mutek Mexico, as well as internationally known spaces such as Fabric (London), Yellow (Tokyo), Rex Club (Paris), The Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles) and many more. In 1999, John met classical jazz guitarist Takeshi Nishimoto, which was the beginning of another musical frontier. The two had a similar meeting as John and Arian had years before and began talking about making music. The project I’m Not A Gun was born and signed soon after to Berlin-based City Centre Offices. This project would bring back John’s own training as a drummer while also trying his hand at the guitar. The project became a mix of John’s own electronic productions along with Takeshi’s professional guitar playing and John’s drumming. The project has enjoyed great reviews and success the world over and the duo has performed live in LA, Japan and Germany. In the summer of 2004, John would – in one week – create the two songs that would catapult his techno career. The classic “Sweat On The Walls,” and “Mono On Mono” were released almost at the same time on two different labels. “Sweat” was released on Pokerflat and “Mono On Mono” on Palette. Together the two records sold over 23,000 copies on vinyl. This lead to the equally successful follow up singles “Paranoia,” “Mind Bend” (with more recent collaborator and Palette-signing, Justin Maxwell) “Voyager,” and “The End Of It All.” With dozens of singles and remixes to his credit, he has also produced full-length albums for Playhouse, Palette, Plug Research, deFocus, Moods and Grooves, Immigrant and A13. http://facebook.com/johntejadaofficial http://residentadvisor.net/dj/johntejada
